Jacarandá

manga

I read this one a few weeks ago, but couldn't find any particular reason to talk about this work. I neither enjoyed it too much nor did I dislike it, and it's the worst when you feel that way about a work, because it's hard to find things to say.

This manga feels very self indulgent in a "I had an overpowering idea and I'll quickly jot it down" way. Me saying that isn't an exaggeration, the mangaka says so himself at the end. This a very standard large scale disaster story, with no particular main character. You get to watch how humanity loses to a massive tree eating up their city. Whether that kind of stuff is what you're into, you might enjoy this.

One thing I really liked about this manga was the artstyle. It feels like the art would be much better suited for a comedy/gag style manga, it looks very goofy and sketchy cartoony. The screaming faces of people in agony look almost hilarious and would look as such if taken out of context. It adds an unsettling layer to the overall work imo. Oh and I love love loved the completely traced and realistic news presenters/anyone of TV. I always love when drawn mediums include stuff like that lmao, in this example the strict divide between regular people and people inside the TV.

Anyway, that's about it really. It was a short work with not much to say besides exploring the concept of "what if large tree destroyed everything". If you like seeing humanity be powerless to stop nature, then go ahead.
