Dungeon Meshi
I haven't reviewed stuff in a while! And that's because I've only been watching seasonal stuff this time around. Currently, video games are my best friend.
Anyway, onto Dungeon Meshi!!! I heard of it ages ago, when the manga was still in its early stages and was obscure with a pretty small fanbase. I'd see a thread pop up on /a/ here or there and my first impressions of it is that it was just yet another cooking manga (those were really popular 8 ish years ago?) and I kind of skipped over it. With time I noticed it's actually kind of interesting but I don't like reading stuff that's actively coming out, because I tend to forget about it really quickly... so I didn't read it anyway. I kind of feel like I made a mistake with not reading it when it was less popular though because of how annoying... all online convos regarding it started to become. Usually I do not give a single shit about fandoms or #hottakes but maaan it felt overwhelming this time around. Anyway, when the anime was announced I was pretty hyped because this sounds like something both me and my husband would enjoy and so we began watching it as soon as it started coming out. Plus I kind of like Trigger so it was a bonus..
I thoroughly enjoyed this anime. A lot of care and thought was put into the worldbuilding and it shows. I love the obsession with digestion and eco systems and how it got blended with a generic western inspired fantasy setting. It's well executed and feels fresh because I don't think this angle was ever covered in such a way, to my knowledge. No I don't care the mangaka is a bit of a feeder fetishist. Let women be freaks for once. No normie could make such an autistic blend of genres and make it work anyway. I'm sick and tired of pearl clutchers working overtime when a woman is concerned! I Do Not Care!!!!
I think the main 5 (6?) characters work great together, I liked their interactions, this actual feeling for once that some of the characters really are weird and are being treated as such. Usually I feel like various media I consoom gets this part wrong.
Idk man, this was just, an overhyped fotm anime done right imo. It didn't fail to meet my expectations, and nothing in the anime was really offensive or annoying lmao. I sincerely hope it'll go down in history as a good and fun fantasy anime, and I can't wait for season 2...
If I had to point out one quirk, this is kind of neither a positive or a negative, but do you ever look at an artists work and think "they were really influenced by modern western art/tumblr/whatever"? Because I got this feeling from Ryoko's work, just like with Witch Hat Atelier lmao... It's just this specific artstyle that I feel like is going to get more popular in the mainstream as the globality of the Internet increases and well, as manga artists get younger.
